I’m Kit Daven, and yes, my name is a pseudonym. Kit is a nickname borrowed from one of my great-great grandmothers—a Katherine. I’m a Cathrene. And Daven is the feminine Welsh form of David, which is one of my favourite names ever. I can’t explain that. I just can’t.
I write stories that explore the gray areas of life and bend reality, spanning the speculative genres of paranormal horror, supernatural suspense and crime, to mythic and sci fantasy. Honestly, I’m not quite sure what I’m searching for in my writing, but recurring themes are identity crisis, family culture, and finding purpose. Psychoanalyze that!
Speaking of homes, I am a part of and currently lurk in the Cambridge Authors collective, KW Writers Alliance, and the Guelph Write Now writing group. The best part of being a member of these groups is they don’t seem to mind that I lurk.
I started promoting my work in late 2013, launching my first book The Forgotten Gemstone at Gallery M in Galt, Ontario.
Since then I’ve been an exhibitor and panelist at Ad Astra (2017-2019), Limestone Genre (2015-2019) and GenreCon (2014). I’ve also sold my books at other conventions throughout Ontario including Anime North, Fan Expo, Montreal Comicon, Niagara Falls Comicon, Tri-City Super Con, Forest City Comicon, Shock Stock, Altekrea, KW Tri-Con and Cambridge Comic Arts Festival… to name a few.
Occasionally I assist author friends on their projects. I co-edited the fantasy anthology Happily Ever After with author Sarah WaterRaven. I was an ARC reader on The Dream Rider Saga written by Douglas Smith. I’ve even done some acting, stepping into the supporting role in the short film Sidney, written and directed by Jen Frankel. Additionally, I’ve done some PA set work on short horror films Sidney and ‘Happy’, an episode of Poppy Seed Place.
So it makes sense that I lurk in the art community, too. In partnernship with my husband, fine artist & illustrator Sean Chappell, we ran a monthly online international juried art gallery called House of Scratch, which culminated in a best of the best art show at the Hang Man Gallery in Toronto, Canada in 2009. Together we’ve hung a couple of the pre-show works at the Grand Cafe in Galt, Ontario for the annual Cambridge Studio Artist Tour.
When I’m not writing, I listen to podcasts on ancient archaeology, read, and study story theory and book cover design. Yes, you’ve presumed correctly. I design my own book covers and interiors, levelling up my skills with every published work.
In my formative years as an army brat, I lived in Toronto then Germany, followed by Petawawa for a while. After moving around a bit—including a second tour in Germany—I lived in Toronto for 20+ years, then finally settled down in the quiet rabbit-covered hills of Hespeler, Ontario, where I enjoy the peace and quiet of a house in constant renovation and spend time with my husband and two Siamese cats, Siren and Skye.

Whether she writes sci fantasy, like A Xiinisi Trilogy (The Forgotten Gemstone, The Other Castle, and The Starry Rise) or supernatural and paranormal thrillers like The Arrest in Mannequin Row and Every Day is Halloween, she’s always looking for ways to bend reality. When Kit isn’t writing or herding cats, she spends time with her husband and her two feline familiars amidst the rabbit-covered hills of Hespeler, Ontario.
